There are different kinds of tuners on the market. Some of them have a mic, which listens to the sound of the bass to tell the pitch being played, and some are contact tuners that "feel" the vibration of the bass directly. Either way, there are some general guidelines on how to ingest them. Usually, you'll poverty to tune the bass to what is known as "standard tuning", which means the strings need to be tuned to the following pitches, starting with the thicker string and moving down:
1. E 2. A 3. D 4. G 5. B 6. E
You'll tune one string at a time. Pluck it, and check what your tuner says. It will give you a noteletter, and the needle will indicate how well it is tuned to it. The needle indicator needs to be pointed directly to top middle, and the letter needs to match the letter of the string, as indicated above. If it does not, you'll have to adjust the screw on the head of the bass to tighten or loosen the string.
